Kara-Douglas

Kara Douglas

Kara Douglas grew up in Dunedin, New Zealand and then moved to Wellington where she currently resides with her husband, and fur babies.

The Air that we Breathe is inspired by her birth father’s story of living in Wittenoom, Western Australia. For the past ten years Kara has immersed herself in researching the history of Wittenoom. She took a year out of full time employment to complete an advanced Diploma in Creative Writing. Kara ventured to the outback with her husband in 2018 to truly experience the essence and uniqueness for the Pilbara Region.

Outside of researching and writing, Kara works full time in leadership development and is also a wedding celebrant.

What authors did you dislike at first but grew into?
No specific authors, but those with very long chapters and those who were into the detail too much.
Do you try more to be original, or to deliver to readers what they want?
Original.
How do you select the names of your characters?
Based on the country I’ve written about.
What was the first book that made you cry?
I can’t remember, but it would be something that had a sad ending for an animal.
If you had to do something differently as a child or teenager to become a better writer as an adult, what would you do?
Focus more in my high school english classes.
Have you Googled yourself? Did you find out anything interesting?
Yes and I appear more than I would like to.
Did you ever consider writing under a pseudonym? Why?
I have written under a pseudonym to keep separation from my personal life and because it was recommended to
me for the story I wrote.
How did publishing your first book change your writing process?
If only I knew the things I know now before I started. If I write another book it will be a lot easier.
How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?
I’ve just recently self-published my book and have three others that have been started.
Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal with bad or good ones?
I have read the few that have gone up – so far so good, when I get a bad one, I will attempt to (easier said than done) shrug it off, we don’t all like the same books.
